How to price furniture from a cutting list

Prosciej (prosciej.com) works out from the cutting list the board area in m² for each decor and thickness and the metres of edge banding, and once you enter your own prices it gives you a priced PDF quote. Hardware, labour, margin and VAT you add yourself — the program does not calculate them.

Pricing panel furniture step by step

Pricing a panel-furniture job starts with quantities of material, and only then with prices. Below are the steps in order: Prosciej does steps 1–4 and 6 automatically, step 5 stays with you.

  1. Make the cutting list: sizes, quantities, decor and board thickness, and the edge banding on each edge. Prosciej takes it live from your 3D project; you can also type parts in by hand or import them from Excel.
  2. Add up the area of the parts in m², separately for each decor and thickness (an 18 mm board and a 3 mm HDF back are two lines). Prosciej does this for you.
  3. Add up the length of the edge banding in running metres, separately for each banding decor and tape thickness. The defaults are 0.8 mm on the carcass and 2.0 mm on fronts. Prosciej totals the banded edges for you.
  4. Multiply by your own prices: a price per m² for every decor and board thickness, and a price per running metre for the banding. Prosciej has no catalogue prices — you enter yours in the price list or import them from a CSV. A decor without a price shows “Price to be set” and stays out of the total.
  5. Add what is not on the cutting list: hardware, labour, margin and VAT. Prosciej does not calculate these — you add them to the total from step 4.
  6. Generate the PDF quote: the cutting list, the totals for boards and banding, and the prices. The version without prices is for the workshop.

Example: the quantities you multiply by your prices

An invented cabinet: a carcass in decor A and one front in decor B, both from 18 mm board. Edge banding of 0.8 mm only on the front edge of each carcass part, and 2.0 mm on all four edges of the front.

These are the quantities Prosciej works out from the cutting list. All that is missing for a quote is your prices: the material cost is the sum of (m² × your price per m²) over all board lines plus the sum of (running metres × your price per metre) over the banding lines.

What you add yourself

A Prosciej quote covers the board and the edge banding. The rest depends on your workshop, so the program guesses nothing here — you add it at the end:

  • Hardware — count the hinges, runners, handles and fittings in the project and add them at your supplier’s prices.
  • Labour — your own rate per hour or per piece of furniture.
  • Margin and VAT — add them last, to the sum of all costs, with your margin and the VAT rate that applies to you.
  • Board waste — the quote counts the area of the parts, so kerf, edge trim and sheet leftovers are not in the total. If you buy whole sheets, take their number from the sheet layout (one sheet in the layout is 5.796 m²) and price the board by sheets instead of m².

Your own prices in Prosciej

You enter prices in the price list: a price per m² separately for each decor and board thickness, and a price per running metre of banding separately for each decor and tape thickness. You can import the price list from a CSV file in the format code;price_per_m2. Decors ship without prices — Prosciej does not fill in catalogue prices.

If you set a price only for another thickness of the same decor, the quote uses the nearest one and marks it as priced by that thickness. Banding never borrows a price from another tape thickness: no price means “Price to be set”.

Pricing furniture from a cutting list — common questions

Does Prosciej calculate the final price of a piece of furniture?
No. It calculates the cost of board and edge banding from your prices. Hardware, labour, margin and VAT you add to that sum yourself.
How do I measure edge banding in metres?
Add up the length of all banded edges of all parts, separately for each decor and tape thickness. Prosciej does it from the cutting list, with no allowance, and rounds the result to 0.01 m.
Where does Prosciej get board prices from?
Nowhere: decors have no prices by default. You enter your own prices per m² in the price list or import them from a CSV file (code;price_per_m2).
Can I send the client a priced PDF and give the workshop one without prices?
Yes. You generate the PDF with the cutting list and sheet layout with or without prices — the “Include prices (quote)” option decides.
Does the quote count whole sheets or only the area used?
Only the area of the parts. If you pay for whole sheets, check their number in the sheet layout and price the board by sheets instead of m².
